What is Argan Oil?

Argan oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of the deciduous argan tree fruit, also known as Argania Spinosa, found only in Morocco. Argan oil has become one of the most expensive oils on the market because its extraction is time-consuming, and the production can only be done by hand.

The Discovery of Argan Oil

After nearly going extinct over 2 million years ago in Northern parts of Africa, during the Ice Age, what trees survived, were found in a particular region of Morocco. Later, the people of Morocco discovered one of its many uses - a light source. Argan oil was used to feed the oil lamps - thanks to its high luminosity! It wasn’t until later that the Berber people discovered more uses for the oil. All of which we recognize today for hair, skin, overall health, and consumption.

Only in Morocco

The Berbers, also referred to as the indigenous people of Morocco, grow these trees in the country's southwest region. Across the plains, an estimated 21 million trees cover almost 800,000 hectares or 2.5 acres. Due to its global impact on the beauty industry, the argan tree became rare and an endangered species. In 1998, the Argan Forest was declared an International Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

Extraction

The oil must be drawn cold and avoid heat to get the maximum nutrients from the oils. This is referred to as cold-pressed or cold-drawn and is sometimes called virgin oil. The oil produced a better flavor by extracting oil through this process.

Health Benefits of Argan Oil

Cold-pressed oils have high nutritional value and are highly recommended. They are rich sources of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. On top of that, they also contain zinc and vitamins that your body loves. Vitamins include vitamin A, C, E, D, and more! Argan oil-based cream can also be used to prevent stretch marks. A study done in 2018 showed that consistent daily use of argan oil improved the skin’s elasticity.

Good Quality Argan Oil

Because argan oil is also used for cooking, it’s essential to understand if you’re using the right oil. One rule to note is that argan oil used in cosmetics can not be used for cooking. It is prepared differently and can cause serious issues. On the other hand, argan oil used in cooking can be used on the skin. The main difference between the two types of oils is the color. The cold-pressed seeds for cosmetic use give the oil a transparent and bright yellow color. While on the other hand, argan oil that’s used for cooking is made from roasted seeds and has a golden-yellow color and looks cloudy.
